Reports to: Program Manager

Location: Santa Cruz, CA

Status: 40 hrs per week (full time), evenings and weekends as needed. Includes benefits. Non-salary.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Save Our Shores is a non-profit marine conservation organization located in Santa Cruz, California with programs in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Mateo Counties. Our mission is caring for the marine environment through ocean awareness, advocacy, and citizen action.


Job Description: 

The Program Coordinator’s primary duties involve managing and coordinating our marine conservation programs, as well as assisting our Program Manager (PM).  This position may also support other SOS staff as time allows.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Sanctuary Stewards Volunteer Program and Volunteer Management

Recruit, train, and manage Sanctuary Steward volunteer program

  • Manage recruitment to find qualified volunteers to join the Steward program
  • Plan curriculum, training events, and appreciation parties for Stewards
  • Assist Program Manager in scheduling the speakers for the Sanctuary Speaker series
  • Manage SOS Steward intranet site and calendar throughout the year to maintain consistent communication and scheduling with Stewards for events
  • Ensure program tracking tool is accurate and updated in a timely matter for all Steward and other volunteer related events
  • Assist in writing Steward related articles for SOS newsletter, website and e-bulletin
  • Assist with Steward and other volunteer related grant applications, obligations and reports
  • Recruit and schedule volunteers for SOS events; manage logistics for events; monitor events to ensure they are staffed by volunteers; run events if necessary
  • Assist staff when volunteer projects arise by finding and managing the volunteers for the duration of the project


Public Beach, River, and Adopt A Levee Cleanups

Coordinate and manage program

  • Permit for cleanups and maintain relationships with City of SC staff for permitting, hauling, event outreach
  • Pack/Unpack supplies and ensure quality control on supply packing from intern
  • Ensure that all cleanup data is processed and tracked in Program Tracking
  • Staff cleanup event as deemed necessary by Program Manager


Adopt a Beach

Coordinate Adopt a Beach program

  • Manage and recruit groups
  • Train AAB Group Leaders at office or on-site for first cleanup
  • Coordinate permits and other cleanup logistics
  • Track progress, schedule cleanups


Outreach and Special Events

Serve as event related support to Program Manager

  • Work with Program Manager to coordinate Annual Coastal Cleanup in Santa Cruz and Monterey: conduct site captain trainings, admin support for permits and trash pickup, and all related tasks
  • Work with Program Manager to coordinate 4th and 5th of July events
  • Work with Program Manager to coordinate other cleanup programs: Holiday Relief, Monthly
  • Staff all cleanup events preferably with volunteers
  • Assist with cleanup related grant applications, obligations and reports
  • Assist in writing cleanup related articles for SOS newsletter, website and e-bulletin
  • Oversee data entry, event tracking, and cleanup entry into program tracking tool
  • Maintain database of cleanup information including running reports as needed
  • Serve as support for large events (Earth Day, July 4/5, ACC) and smaller fairs and festivals
  • Coordinate permits, event logistics as tasked by Program Manager
  • Coordinate with Program Manager for event details, scheduling and recruiting volunteers
  • Staff events as necessary



Serve as primary staff leading education programs

  • Support Program Manager in contacting schools, scheduling and delivering school presentations
  • Assist Program Manager in developing curriculum for presentations
  • Assist with maintaining educational supplies and teacher relationships
  • Assist with education related grant applications, obligations and reports
  • Assist in writing education related articles for SOS newsletter, website and e-bulletin
  • Assist with educational community presentations as they arise
  • Conduct school presentations (MPAs, plastic pollution, leatherbacks, general SOS) scheduled by PM
  • Coordinate interns to assist with educational presentations
  • Track all school presentations and educational cleanups in Program tracking



Assist Executive Director in advocacy projects

  • Complete data collection and community surveying projects as deemed necessary by
  • Attend and speak at relevant meetings
  • Coordinate volunteers to assist with these efforts.


Clean Boating

Serve as support staff leading Clean Boating events

  • Conduct and/or attend Dockwalker – boater education and outreach events.
  • Pack, unpack, maintain Clean Boating supplies
  • Attend regional trainings by Coastal Commission/DBW
  • Recruit volunteers for Clean Boating events


Community Service and Internship Volunteer Management

Manage community service volunteers for SOS events and projects

  • Schedule and manage community service volunteers
  • Recruit and train new interns as necessary
  • Sign necessary service/internship agreement or verification documents
  • Schedule check ins and intern celebrations


Storm Drain Stenciling

Serve as primary contact for storm drain projects

  • Coordinate all storm drain stenciling projects
  • Ensure that stenciled storms are tracked appropriately



  • Commensurate Experience and/or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Spanish proficiency/fluency preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and data management
  • Flexibility and strong time/schedule management
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Ability to multi-task and take responsibility for assigned tasks
