October 17, 2024Our Junior Sanctuary Stewards are a curious bunch of middle school students eager to deepen their understanding of Monterey Bay and its ecosystems. Our adventures take us to various locations around the Bay, each offering unique learning opportunities. On Friday, October 25th, we visited a tidal estuary in Moss Landing for an afternoon of kayaking.
Our day began with a comprehensive briefing on water safety from the estuary’s knowledgeable instructors. Once the students were outfitted in life jackets and equipped with paddles, their reactions varied—some were brimming with excitement and curiosity, while others were a bit hesitant, seeking reassurance about the safety of the water. Despite initial nervousness about tipping over, every student bravely got into their kayak, either with a friend or alongside one of our educators.
Once on the water, the real fun began. We were greeted by a few inquisitive sea lions who seemed just as curious about us as we were about them. The students had the chance to sample fresh ‘Pickle Grass’ from the estuary and were thrilled to discover and handle a sea urchin.
The activities were diverse and engaging. Some students took part in friendly kayak races, channeling their competitive spirits. Others focused on collecting seaweed, dreaming up imaginative ideas for a seaweed business. The evening was filled with laughter and learning, with the serene backdrop of the estuary adding to the magic of the experience.
It was heartwarming to witness students overcoming their fears, forging new friendships, and immersing themselves in the beauty and wonder of our natural environment. This joyful day on the water was another memorable chapter in the ongoing journey of our Junior Sanctuary Stewards, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of our precious Monterey Bay.
