A Peek into the Sanctuary Steward Experience!
February 3, 2025Through UCSC’s Humanities Excel Internship program, I am the Communications and Programs Intern at Save Our Shores. My days are dynamic–I get to make fun posts and glow as a reliable set of hands when I’m needed. I attend beach cleanups, engaging tabling events, and Junior Sanctuary Stewards outings. In these spaces I love sharing what I’ve learned about marine conservation after participating in Sanctuary Steward training.
Working with students and bringing them ideas about being responsible for their environment makes me feel great about the future of our oceans. I interact with many youth through our programs and events who often come with their supportive parents who understand how important it is to show them these ideas so early. I’m filled with joy when I see many of you ensure the safety of our oceans by informing the minds of our future generations.
As a student studying ethnic studies, I’m able to bring my knowledge of history and social relationships to my work. My studies make me confident in sharing my positive energy and having caring conversations with people who are curious about the work SOS does and what we have to offer.
I love being a part of a space that values my voice and role despite me only being 19. I am never belittled or silenced but rather encouraged, listened to, and cared for. My perspective as both a Black woman and a passionate student is valued and incorporated. In my role I feel good about ensuring that language and outreach is effective, thoughtful, and accessible.
Knowing that my time at SOS will come to an end as the school year wraps up makes me sad to imagine. I feel as though I’ve been adopted into a safe community of people, and I hope that my next internship venture can meet the same standards.
