UPDATED ON 9/29/14: We are thrilled to announce the results of the 30th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day in Monterey Bay. On Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m.-noon, 3,884 volunteers at 83 sites located between Waddell Creek and Big Sur prevented 24,379 pounds of pollution and debris from entering the bay!

In Santa Cruz County alone, 2,588 volunteers collected 14,459 pounds of waste.

In Monterey County alone, 1,296 volunteers removed 9,920 pounds of waste.

Aarush Gopal-westmont high ecology clubThe top five dirtiest cleanup sites, in order: Elkhorn Slough Research Reserve (4,800 lbs), Lompico Creek at Lompico Park (4,100 lbs), Felton Covered Bridge Park (2,700 lbs), Upper Carr Lake (2,062 lbs), and San Lorenzo River at Fillmore Street in Ben Lomond (817 lbs).

– A Christmas tree and 15 antifreeze containers (Ben Lomond)
– A camper shell from a truck (Lompico Creek)
– A bow from a shipwrecked boat (4 Mile Beach)
– A 12-foot-long water pipe from 1934 (McAbee Beach)
– 90 dead juvenile ocean sunfish (Monterey State Beach)
– 20 lb bag of old bread rolls (Bay Photo street cleanup, Monterey)
– 20 piles of human waste, 6 syringes and a giant plastic airplane (Tannery Arts Center at the San Lorenzo River)
– One pink bra and a seagull caught in a fishing line, which was eventually rescued (SCUBA at the Santa Cruz Wharf )
