Join Save Our Shores and more than 60,000 Californians as we clean our state’s beaches and waterways!
We need your help to restore the beauty of the Central Coast from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, September 19.
Not only is Annual Coastal Cleanup Day our biggest cleanup of the year, but it is also the largest volunteer event on the planet. Volunteers in more than 100 countries around the world come together with one goal: to prevent hundreds of thousands of pounds of pollution from trashing our oceans and harming marine wildlife.
During last year’s event, 3,884 volunteers with Save Our Shores collected 24,379 pounds of trash and recycling from our coast. We would love to increase the amount of participation this year!
The success of Annual Coastal Cleanup Day depends on the leadership of our Site Captains! Site Captains attend a brief training session at the beginning of September and arrive early on Annual Coastal Cleanup Day to sign in volunteers, distribute cleanup supplies and provide a safety briefing. Whether you are a regular SOS volunteer or this would be your first time, participating in Annual Coastal Cleanup Day is exciting and easy.
Those interested in becoming a Site Captain should email volunteer(at)saveourshores.org.
What to expect as a volunteer:
Volunteers arrive at their cleanup site at 9 a.m. ready to get to work! Pre-registration is encouraged, but not mandatory. Bringing your own waiver form will save you time (email volunteer(at)saveourshores.org for a waiver form). You may also register and sign a waiver form once you arrive at the cleanup.
Please Note: For river cleanup sites, closed-toed shoes, rubber boots, and heavy/garden gloves will help keep you clean and dry.
At the cleanup, your Site Captain will sign you in, distribute cleanup supplies, and provide a safety briefing. We encourage all volunteers to bring reusable bags, buckets, gloves, and a reusable water bottle to lower the carbon footprint of this event.
If you are a teacher interested in joining us for a school cleanup at your favorite beach in Santa Cruz County or Monterey County before Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, contact Rachel Kippen at rachel(at)saveourshores.org.
