About The Programs at SOS

At Save Our Shores we believe that healthy oceans are only possible when everyone is aware of the challenges facing our oceans and involved in finding solutions.  Our programs deal with a wide array of issues, from marine debris to water quality and thriving ecosystems.

Through each program, SOS strives to educate and actively engage our community.  We also work to inform local, regional and state leaders and policy makers on the issues and collaborate with them to implement solutions.

To find out more about each of our programs read the descriptions below or go to our Program Pages.

Marine Debris Program:
Our oceans are filling up with garbage, especially plastics, and this threatens the future of thriving oceans, endangers marine animals and poses threats to human health.  To learn more about how you can make a difference, visit our Marine Debris Program page.

DockWalker Program:
Small oil spills happen everyday.  In fact more oil enters US waters each year from land based run off and boaters than the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (which dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound).   The SOS DockWalker Program is an innovative, volunteer based program that educates boaters about the impacts of oil contamination and provides boaters with oil spill cleanup materials.  To learn more about how to get involved visit our DockWalker Program page.

Sustainable Fisheries Program:

It's no secret that the majority of the world's fisheries are in a state of crisis.  Fisheries are an integral part of life on this planet, in terms of ecological health, economics and as a major source of food.  The solutions to creating sustainable fisheries are just as diverse as the problems, from implementing conservation areas to allow fish populations to recover to launching public awareness campaigns to change consumer habits.  To learn more about these issues visit SOS's developing Sustainable Fisheries Program page.
