Teacher Resources

Here at Save Our Shores, we believe that education should be fun and interactive! We offer free educational resources to teachers in order to help make it easier for educators to teach their students about marine-related issues.

The following is a list of resources:
  1. Synthetic Seas Video: An in-depth and visually stimulating video about marine debris, 'Synthetic Seas' was developed by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Key video topics include: the parameters of plastics, the most recent Pacific Gyre voyage, and the endocrine disruption problem in our marine ecosystems. Interviews with key researchers and scientists are coupled with moving images of our ocean systems. This is a great resource used to complement SOS classroom presentations on marine debris and the ways that we can each help prevent debris in our Bay. This video includes advanced concepts and is most appropriate for middle and high school classrooms, although the video can be used with supplemental interpretation in elementary schools. Approximate run time of 30 minutes.
  2. Save Our Shores Education Manual: SOS offers over 20 various interactive activities each touching on aspects of marine conservation and ecology, including topics on food webs, decomposition times, and the impacts of plastic pollution. The Manual also includes a field component for conducting beach and river cleanups. Activities are broken down by grade level and include procedures, material lists, and general instructions. Teachers are welcome to borrrow SOS' material kits which include all needed materials for activities. To receive a copy of SOS' Education Manual please contact Emily at emily@saveourshores.org
  3. Sea Studios Foundation DVD "Strange Days on Planet Earth Season 2", appropriate for middle and high school students. This video, narrated by Edward Norton, details the consequences of our actions with a focus on the state of our oceans. This is a 2 hour series and includes "Dangerous Catch" and "Dirty Secrets". For more information visit the Sea Studios Foundation website. "Plastic Plague" and "Dangers of Plastic" appropriate for middle and high school students also address the impacts of plastic pollution. Additionally, "Once Upon a Tide" DVD clip appropriate for elementary school students which allows younger students to make a connection to the ocean environment and its resources as well as introduces them to the plastic pollution problem. To receive a copy of on of these informational DVDs, please contact Emily at emily@saveourshores.org.
  4. EnviroScapes Watershed Model: This is a great tool designed to simulate a watershed and demonstrates in a visual manner what happens to all of the by-products we use in our everyday lives when rains come to the watershed. Students are able to watch as all the materials are drained into the ocean. A follow-up discussion on what a watershed encompasses, and how our actions on land still have a big impact on our oceans is encouraged.
  5. California Coastal Commission’s “Waves, Wetlands, and Watersheds” Activity Guide: This is a classroom-based hands-on activity guide that integrates California Coastal Commission areas of critical concern (wetlands, coastal processes, marine debris and pollution, and endangered species) with California Science Content Standards for grades three through eight.
  6. Cleanup Kit: Save Our Shores can supply a Cleanup Kit which contains all the necessities for a successful cleanup. The cleanup experience is more in-depth when SOS provides a cleanup leader, so we recommend using our cleanup kits as a back-up. Kit contents include: Trash and Recycle bags, latex gloves, data cards, marine debris information, a scale to weigh debris, and trash pickers. In addition, SOS will coordinate garbage pickup for your cleanup. All participants must sign a waiver form and kit contents must be returned within one week of your cleanup.
  7. Activity Kit: When it’s not possible to schedule an SOS educator to come into the classroom, teachers can check out instructions and supplies for some of our most popular activities. Kits are available for the following activities: Food Web, Mistaking Plastic for Food, Perils of Plastic, Getting Out of a Bind, Living Downstream & Habitat Board.
