Our Environmental Office

The Save Our Shores office strives to be friendly to the environment while running its operations. In early 2008 SOS adopted an Environmental Purchasing and Procedures Policy which makes it office policy to source from local green businesses, encourage re-use and recycling of office supplies, and many other environmentally sustainable practices.

Here is a short list of the businesses we support (if we haven't mentioned you and you belong here, please remind us to add you to the list!):

  • Santa Cruz Computers - The best local technical support business in Santa Cruz. SOS is proud to have SC Computers help with our in-office technology. SC Computers has gone beyond any other technical support company in the area by installing PV Solar panels on its whole office reducing their carbon footprint on our ocean.
  • Community Printers - SOS uses the great local business to print its widely syndicated Newsletter sent out 3 times a year. By using this business SOS prints on recycled paper, and soy based ink.
  • Grey Bears - e-waste recycling and technology disposal
  • Santa Cruz Community Credit Union is "a nonprofit financial cooperative that promotes economic justice." SOS is proud to use their financial services.
  • Rapid Refill Ink- refills printer ink, so cartridges are reused, reducing waste.  Rapid Refill also recycles cartridges that are no longer used.
  • Palace Art Supply - local office supply store
  • University Copy - local copy shop
  • Cruzio - local internet service provider

Here is a short list of office procedures we use:

  • Working with local, green vendors and supporting local, green businesses whenever possible
  • Recycling bins at every desk and only one trash can for the whole office
  • Purchasing materials with high recycled content whenever possible
  • Printing internal documents on used paper
  • Printing outreach materials on recycled paper
  • Using re-usable plates, cups and utensils at the office, and steel water bottles instead of plastic
  • Using compostable plates, cups and utensils at events
  • Using energy efficient light bulbs where possible
  • Providing water from a large dispenser to staff and guests instead of using individual water bottles
  • Reusing flyers for notepads
  • Reusing folders and other office supplies
  • Removing our address from mailing lists to save paper
  • Making SOS merchandise including t-shirts and sweatshirts from organic cotton, SOS stickers are manufactured with zero water consumption or toxic agents
  • Encouraging staff to bike to work, and recently installed a bike rack at the office
  • Carpooling whenever possible
Highlights:
  • We were awarded FIRST PRIZE in the small business group for most miles commuted during Bike to Work Week 2008!
  • We hosted our 2009 annual fundraiser, the Toast to the Coast, as a zero waste event!
