Stop the threat of offshore oil drilling off our coast by contacting your Representative

Save Our Shores, the leader in ocean awareness, advocacy, and action on the Central Coast, was started 30 years ago when a group of citizens of Santa Cruz banded together to fight offshore oil drilling on the Central Coast of California. As residents with a remarkably rich ocean in our backyards, we realized the urgent need to protect these important ecosystems from the environmental hazards that offshore oil drilling could cause. Stop the threat of offshore oil drilling off our coast by contacting your Representative.

Fast forward to today - June 18, 2008 - President Bush joined Senator John McCain in calling on Congress to end the ban that has protected America's most pristine coastlines from oil drilling since 1981.

The current high price of oil seems to have caused the current administration to suggest that opening our coastal areas to oil drilling will solve this problem. This is not the solution. The Energy Information Administration states that opening our coast today won't drop the price of oil until the year 2030. The US only has 3% of the world's oil, yet consumes 25% of all oil consumed worldwide. Drilling for oil off of our coasts poses severe threats to our fragile ocean ecosystems. These habitats have already suffered tremendously from previous oil spills and we can not afford to endanger them further.

Save Our Shores is calling for citizen action to let Congress know that we need to maintain the moratorium on oil drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf. Find your Congress person and let them know that you don't want our coasts opened up for drilling. Please forward this action alert to your friends and families in other states so that they can call their Congress persons as well.

Instead of increasing supply, Save Our Shores is encouraging conservation. For example, reducing our dependence on plastic products such as water bottles and plastic bags will help reduce oil consumption. In addition, recycling these materials will cut down on the need for new oil. We also advocate for renewable energies and we encourage our members to move toward more sustainable forms of energy, in particular we partner with REC Solar Company to offer our members $300 off per kilowatt system.

Please have your voice be heard, take action, and help protect our beautiful shores.
