Promoting greater awareness of marine conservation issues and stewardship of our coastal and ocean resources.

SOS utilized the results from our Everyone Deserves Reserves survey by crafting appropriate messages and relevant conservation topics to inform central coast residents about ocean protection and marine policy issues.

SOS launched the 2005 Stewardship Series™, noted above, to promote education and inspire citizens to protect and conserve the marine ecosystems of California’s Central coast. In addition, SOS led in-field stewardship activities including our annual Earth Day and Star Spangled Beaches™ clean ups to remove trash and preserve our coastline. In 2005, SOS led 26 beach and creek sites in San Mateo County as the county coordinator during Coastal Clean-Up Day.

SOS’ Sea Lion Stewards education program provided education on marine mammal husbandry, marine debris, habitat protection, and stewardship of our ocean resources to 1,040 students and teachers from coastal and inland regions.

SOS began a unique marine education partnership with the City of Monterey Fire Department to promote greater protection of the marine environment through their Shoreline Operations Program and the installation of their upgraded aquatic emergency response fireboat.
