Sustainable Fisheries

Fisheries are in a state of decline world wide.  We must act to reverse this situation to ensure that ocean ecosystems return to abundate, stable states to ensure the overall health of our oceans and the availablity of seafood world wide.

We will only be able to arrive at sustainable solutions if we actively work to include all stakeholders in this process.  The future of fisheries relies on the ability of fisherman, scientists, policy makers, educators (like Save Our Shores) and all citizens to work together to meet all of our needs.  This is a issue that requires multi-approach solutions.

Conservation Areas and California's Marine Protected Areas:

Save Our Shores recognizes the complexity and urgency of the situation.  Conservation areas, or "no take zones" are critical to recovering fish populations by allowing species safe zones for reproduction.  We are excited to see the recent implementation of the 29 Marine Protected Areas on California's Central Coast and we look forward to monitoring their effectiveness and helping fisherman learn how to adapt to this new conservation method.  To learn more about the newly implemented Marine Protected Areas click here.

Consumer Choices and Voting with you Dollars:

We also recognize the important role that consumers play in sustainable fisheries.  We encourage our members and other concerned citizens to educate yourselves on which seafood choices are sustainable and which seafood choices should be avoided.  We recommend the following two sources to help you get educated:
  • The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program publishes pocket guides, updated several times a year, that help you know what seafood is best to eat.  The pocket guides and more information can be found at www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp
  • FishWise is a labeling program that grocery stores can use to help consumers know which seafood is best to buy.  To find out more about their program or how to get FishWise labels at your favorite grocery store, visit them at www.sustainablefishery.org/

Save Our Shores knows that properly managing our fisheries is a critical issue for the future of our oceans so we are in the process of developing an innovative and indepth Sustainable Fisheries Program; expect to see more on this topic in the coming months!
