Save Our Shores, with the help of some of our Santa Cruz Sanctuary Steward volunteers as well as Coastsider volunteers, coordinated a cleanup along Pilarcitos Creek on May 17th. In total, volunteers removed 906 pounds of trash and 161 pounds of recycling from the creek! Some of the more memorable items collected included: 11 shopping carts, 1 metal bed frame, 4 tires, one metal couch frame, an oxygen tank, 3 pallets, 2 coolers, 3 camping stoves, a stereo and tape player, a City 'No Parking' sign and post, 2 car batteries, 3 used motor oil containers, and much more.
Volunteers met at the Pilarcitos foot bridge across from the Safeway parking lot, as this location was deemed most in need of cleanup efforts. In addition, volunteers worked to remove debris from the mouth of the creek at Venice Beach.
Mike Kahn, a photographer and founder of Green Stalk Media, has posted pictures in his online gallery of the cleanup. These provide a valuable glimpse at the amount of debris that was removed from the creek that day. You can find these cleanup photos along with Mike's other photographs by following the link :
Please stay posted as Save Our Shores will be coordinating future cleanups in the Half Moon Bay area. For site locations or questions please contact Emily at the Save Our Shores office!
