Volunteer with Save Our Shores

Looking for ways to get outside, have some fun and help our ocean?

The Volunteer Program is the citizen action arm of Save Our Shores. When individuals join SOS they become part of a dynamic team of motivated staff and volunteers dedicated to the stewardship of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Volunteers may choose from several levels of participation from attending an event to functioning as an event leader.

Save Our Shores Volunteers

General Volunteers help Save Our Shores with basic operations and making our events successful. We always need help with special projects and mailings in our office. Or come participate in one of our events. Typical volunteer events include:

  • Beach/River Cleanup Activities
  • Storm Drain Stenciling
  • Festivals & Lectures
  • Boater Education & Oil Spill Prevention
To attend an event check out our Calendar of Events or contact our Volunteer Programs Coordinator Kate at 831 462-5660 ext. 3#.

Sanctuary Steward Program

Are you interested in becoming a community leader in ocean conservation?  The Sanctuary Steward program offers a fun and comprehensive lecture series to prepare you on the issues facing our local waters. The guiding principal of the program is to enable local community members to apply themselves at the highest possible level as advocates for our Monterey Bay!

Graduates of the Sanctuary Steward program become activity leaders facilitating the community in projects for ocean conservation. Sanctuary Stewards lead classroom presentations, nature activities, boat tours and beach programs!  Stewards help to educate the greater community on issues such as pollution prevention, marine debris, habitat conservation and marine fisheries. Internship Program

There are no ordinary internships here!  At Save Our Shores, interns are an important and integral part of the team.  Internships range from office administration assistance, to classroom education, program development and special event organizing.  At Save Our Shores, interns get a real experience of what it's like to work for a non-profit. Prepare to roll up your shirt sleeves and get your hands dirty!

Internships are offered every quarter or semester for credit.  Work-study internships are available on a limited basis.  To find out about current openings and to get an application contact Kate at 462-5660 ext. 3#.
