National Rivers Day Cleanup

Save Our Shores National Rivers Day Cleanup at the San Lorenzo River, Crystal Birns Photography

Celebrate National Rivers Day.

The San Lorenzo River is one of Santa Cruz County’s main veins to the ocean. It feeds big blue with vital nutrients, replenishes coastal sediment and provides safe haven for wildlife. The river is a precious resource worth celebrating and protecting, making it the perfect location for our 2017 National Rivers Day Cleanup in partnership with City of Santa Cruz. Join us outside and enjoy the sun as you volunteer for this special cleanup on Saturday, May 20th from 10am-noon. Check-in will be on the river levee above from Mimi de Marta Park. We’ll be cleaning the levee from Soquel Ave to Laurel Street bridge in Downtown Santa Cruz.

As a token of our appreciation and thanks to the City of Santa Cruz, volunteers get FREE reusable produce bags! The bags help our community to reduce single-use waste, the most common type of trash we find along our river levee cleanups.

GET A HEAD START, PLEASE SIGN OUR SAFETY WAIVER AND BRING IT WITH YOU:

2017 English Cleanup Waiver

2017 Spanish Cleanup Waiver

Cleanups supplies are provided, but we encourage you to bring your own reusable bucket and gloves. We recommend that you bring close-toed shoes, sun protection and a reusable water-bottle. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult, volunteers are required to sign a safety waiver.

Last year, our volunteers swept up more than 400 lbs of trash from flowing to the ocean!

Every year, Save Our Shores honors the holiday by combining public river awareness with action to keep our local watersheds healthy… which is just a fancy way of saying that we host a morning cleanup stroll along the levee. The rewarding experience is fun and full of trash grabbers and smiles.

Save Our Shores and City of Santa Cruz Partnership

Save Our Shores would like to thank all of our partners and sponsors that celebrated National Rivers Day with us. This cleanup effort is funded by the City of Santa Cruz Clean River, Beaches and Ocean Fund.
