LAST SATURDAY, the Santa Cruz Derby Girls, Save Our Shores and Sanctuary Stewards, City of Santa Cruz Staff, UCSC students, and other proactive community members joined at the end of Josephine St. to spend the morning picking up trash along the San Lorenzo River levee and the Riverwalk.
Armed with data cards, gloves, and buckets, 67 participants picked up an astounding 245 lbs of garbage and 30 lbs of recycling that would otherwise either still be polluting the San Lorenzo River or floating in our bay. Among the items removed were metal chains and scraps, parts of children’s toys, abandoned chairs, needles, torn clothing, and of course tons of plastic.
This public river cleanup was made possible thanks to the City of Santa Cruz Clean River, Beaches, and Ocean Fund
. Because of the city’s support, Save Our Shores was able to provide volunteers with free reusable produce bags to help encourage behavioral changes and reduce plastic bag pollution. Save Our Shores gives a big shoutout to the Santa Cruz Derby Girls
for rallying, getting dirty, and helping to clean and promote the successful river cleanup!
