Meet Save Our Shores Board of Directors.
Morgan has 27 years' experience as an attorney, working as an
environmental prosecutor for the Monterey and Santa Cruz District
Attorney's Offices for the past 20 years. He has advised many
non-profit organizations, including SOS, with the development of
by-laws and establishing tax exempt status. Morgan's experience is
primarily in environmental law, organizational development, and program
planning/evaluation. As an ocean advocate, sailor and long-time member
of such organizations as the Sierra Club and Save Our Shores, he has
advocated for sensitivity to environmental issues.
Jennifer is a Santa Cruz resident and works for the California
chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Her work includes budget
preparation, fundraising, strategic planning and annual budgets for the
chapter's philanthropy department. She also performs Board development
consulting, leading trainings and recommending Board nominees. She
currently manages the Conservancy's board of trustees. Jennifer is very
experienced in fundraising, personnel management, public speaking, and
special events. She is also experienced in planning, financial
management, communication and writing. As a diver and beach-goer, she
is an ocean advocate with general knowledge of regional marine
conservation efforts and national efforts by The Nature Conservancy.
Jennifer has served as a volunteer board or committee member to several
organizations.
Fred joined the Board in October 2006. He is author of the Marine
Life Management Act and co-author of the Marine Life Protection Act
(MLPA), and other landmark park and environmental protection bonds.
Fred authored the California Ocean Science Trust Act, which provides a
venue and funding for coordinated marine research along the California
coast. He has lectured on MLPA and FLMA at Hopkins Marine Lab, UCLA, UC
Berkeley, UCSC, Cal State Monterey Bay, SJSU, Moss Landing Marine Labs,
MBARI, and other marine related conferences. Fred is the Northern
California Finance Committee Chair for the California League of
Conservation Voters. He is Board President for the Planned Parenthood
Advocates Mar Monte (largest chapter) and participates in the Voices of
Reform Project for the Commonwealth Club of California. Fred has also
served two terms as a member of the Santa Cruz County Board of
Supervisors, and has served in the California State Assembly.
Ken joined the Board in August 2006. Ken holds the title of
worldwide Environmental, Health and Safety Audit Manager for Palo
Alto-based Hewlett Parkard Company. Ken has nearly thirty years
experience in environmental management and consulting for industry and
as a government regulator with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Gary R. Smith is a lifelong resident of California. Professionally,
Gary has been a real estate loan officer for 6 years. He is also the
president of O.P.P.A., Inc. and co-owner of Monterey Live. He is an
ambassador with the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce and a member,
Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (MPCC).
Gary has been heavily involved in the community. He currently serves
as the First Vice-President of the Forest Grove Elementary School
P.T.A. and is a board member for Save our Shores (specializing in
fundraising). Gary has been a member of the Sons of Italy in America
for over 17 years. He also volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America,
Troop 126 as secretary of the board. Gary is a happily married father
of three and is very active in helping educate our children in the
importance of a healthy environment.
Kim was a founding member of Save Our Shores in 1978 and served as
the first Chairperson of the SOS Board. He returned to the Board in
March 2007 after a 17 year hiatus. Kim is a resident of Aptos and owns
Cypress Environmental and Land Use Planning which is engaged in both
environmental impact assessment and land use planning for public
agencies and private individuals. Kim is a Certified Environmental
Professional (CEP) and holds a Master of Science in Urban and Regional
Planning. He has worked in land use and environmental planning for 28
years. Kim is very experienced in public speaking, organizing events
and technical writing. He is also Vice-president of Monterey Bay
Chapter of the Association of Environmental Professionals. Kim is a
NAUI certified scuba diver. Two of his other pastimes are kayaking and
body surfing. An avid long distance runner, Kim’s running routes
include Aptos area beaches at low tides.
After graduating from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004 Jessie enrolled in the Americorps VISTA program researching and writing grants for the Monterey based Shelter Outreach Plus. Primarily involved in fundraising, budget preparation and grant management, Jessie now works for Shelter Outreach Plus as the Director of Development. Volunteering with Save Our Shores along with local chapters of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and CalPIRG, Jessie strives to be a lifelong supporter of local non-profits. Never living more than 5 miles from the ocean, Jessie looks forward to her time with Save Our Shores and California’s Central Coast beaches which provide a lifetime venue for running, diving and surfing.
Ginaia works as an attorney, running her own business and having
served as the President of the Santa Cruz County Bar Association. She was
also active in the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz, spearheading and
implementing a large scale social program for the City, and earning her the
“Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.” Ginaia has worked in print and
broadcast journalism, and has experience in fundraising, marketing, and public
speaking. She currently is serving as the President of Pacific
Elementary’s PTA. Ginaia has a strong love for the ocean, as she is an avid
surfer of 17 years, including experience competing in the World
Surfing Championships in Costa Rica. She has even worked as a performer in
ocean-based theme parks around the world, including San Diego's SeaWorld,
Ohio's SeaWorld, Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, and Japan’s Adventure World!
